A recent spree of armed robberies has put the Chicago neighborhood of Calumet, Gresham, and Morgan Park residents on edge. A community alert issued by the Chicago Police Department details a series of violent thefts where victims have been held at gunpoint for their valuables and vehicles.
The notice indicates that the incidents all took place on March 6, 2024, with robberies reported in the 10000 block of S. Michigan, 7700 block of S. Prairie, 8900 block of S. MLK Dr., and the 900 block of W. 87th St. In each instance, the culprits forcibly commandeered the victim's car, and used it to travel across different districts committing further crimes against solitary pedestrians. A common theme in each ordeal, at least one of the three offenders wielded a handgun.
Descriptions provided by the Chicago Police reveal that the suspects are three African American males, possibly aged between 16 and 18 years, each donning black ski masks. Their height was around 5'9", with the added warning that each could be armed with handguns, making them a substantial threat to public safety.
In response to these criminal acts, residents are advised to stay vigilant and take precautionary measures. The Chicago Police Department encourages anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation to try and stay calm and to call 911 immediately if they witness any related activities. Pedestrians are urged to be mindful of their surroundings and walk in well-lit areas, particularly while the perpetrators are at large. Moreover, individuals are prompted to utilize tracking software and security locks on mobile devices and, maintain a record of their electronics' serial numbers at home.
