The incident began when officers responded to gunfire detected by the ShotSpotter system shortly after 3 p.m. on the 8000 block of South Western Avenue, a police source told the Chicago Sun-Times. The male suspect barricaded himself inside a building but was subsequently taken into custody around 7:30 p.m., after negotiations with police. The subject, whose identity has not yet been released, was transported to a hospital and listed in fair condition.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is currently investigating the officer-involved shooting. According to CBS Chicago, there were no injuries reported among the officers engaged in the standoff that led to Western Avenue being closed for several hours.
