The Chicago Police Department is ramping up its efforts to curb drunk driving this weekend with a DUI Saturation Patrol in the city's 1st (Central) District. Officials say the patrol is set to kick off on the evening of Sunday, March 10, and will extend until the early hours of Monday, March 11. Motorists can expect an increased police presence, along with a crackdown on impaired driving and other traffic violations such as speeding and seat belt compliance.
Designed to target a specific area, the operation will deploy roving officers who will be on the lookout for signs that a driver may be under the influence. In a strategy to catch speedsters, police vehicles decked out with speed detection gear will be out in force. According to information released by the Chicago Police Department, these patrols are not only about nabbing drunk drivers but also enforcing traffic laws related to speed and safety belt use.
The initiative also introduces the Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit, a tool that streamlines the process for officers charging individuals with DUI. The mobile unit will be deployed to expedite charging and allow for Individual Recognizance Bonds (I-Bonds) to be issued directly at the DUI Saturation Patrol site. This is intended to streamline the process of dealing with DUI offenses, getting officers back on patrol quicker.
While the immediate goal is to reduce incidents of impaired driving, the long-term aim of these patrols is to reinforce safe driving practices and prevent alcohol-related accidents. The Chicago Police Department's blend of high visibility enforcement and technology, like the BAT Mobile Unit, is a testament to their commitment to keeping the streets safe. The department is hopeful that the presence of the DUI Saturation Patrol will act as a deterrent for those considering driving after having too many drinks.
