A Chicopee man has been sentenced to a two-decade stint behind bars for the serious crime of exploiting children through the creation and distribution of child pornography. Michael Geoffroy, aged 36, faced the gavel yesterday in federal court in Springfield where U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni delivered the 20-year prison sentence, along with an additional 10 years of supervised release.
Geoffroy's reprehensible actions, which included sexually exploiting a minor and spreading those images, led to his conviction on multiple counts. In the words directly taken from an announcement by the U.S. Attorney's Office, "Michael Geoffroy sexually abused a little girl and documented it for his own twisted gratification." A search of his cellphone unveiled a stash of over 100 videos and images of child sexual abuse material. His plead of guilty on February 16, 2023, encompassed three counts of sexual exploitation of a child, three counts of distribution of child pornography and one count possession of child pornography.
The case showcases the priority given to protecting vulnerable children by law enforcement. Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy hammered this point home, saying, "There is no higher priority in this office than protecting vulnerable children," and emphasizing the ongoing commitment to holding individuals accountable. Moreover, Jodi Cohen, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division, underscored the irreversible impact on the victims, stating, "His trove of horrific images of that child and others represents an unimaginable level of pain and trauma inflicted on young victims."
Geoffroy's arrest and subsequent conviction sprung from a coordinated effort, shining light on the deep-seated collaboration within the criminal justice system to tackle child exploitation head-on. The Chicopee Police Department provided key assistance, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Neil L. Desroches leading the legal battle in court. The case forms part of Project Safe Childhood - a larger initiative by the Department of Justice that was launched back in May 2006 to specifically combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
