Concordia University Ann Arbor is set to keep its doors open for the 2024-2025 school year, dodging what seemed to have been an imminent shutdown due to dire financial straits. The administration determined to rapidly begin downsizing operations and costs in efforts to maintain the institution's future sustainability within existing revenues. "I was honestly really upset. I didn’t know what to do. I live almost an hour away. I don’t have family," freshman Isabella Schwirzinski told WXYZ.
Struggling beneath the weight of multimillion-dollar deficits, the university admitted to facing significant financial instability. Staff cuts and the potential selling off of facility assets were a part of a broader plan announced to mitigate the deficit. In a statement obtained by WXYZ, the Rev. John M. Berg of the CUWAA Board of Regents mentioned starting to explore the possibility of the Ann Arbor campus seeking full autonomy as part of a rigorous plan to stay afloat.
The university had previously announced that despite a spike in enrollment, it was still losing money, causing worry among the students and faculty. Ray Washington, a junior at Concordia, told CBS News Detroit, "It was tough, taking exams, focusing on class with all the stuff weighing on your shoulders." The potential decoupling from Concordia's Wisconsin campus was also announced as a countermeasure to these financial challenges, as reported by MLive.
Though specific details concerning the extent of staff cuts have yet to be publicized, university spokespersons conveyed that these decisions are yet to be finalized. However, amid the distressing news, students on sports scholarships are finding some relief. "It was definitely a bit of relief because coming here and having to possibly transfer out is a big thing, especially with sports scholarships getting messed up," Trevor Meyer, a freshman soccer player, admitted to WXYZ. Similarly, sophomore accounting student Hunter Fletcher added, "But I’m glad it all worked out and I can stay with the family I made here."
The close-knit community at Concordia University Ann Arbor maintains a cautiously optimistic perspective regarding its financial situation, with some like sophomore Spencer Mosher expressing enthusiasm for the future. "I’m really excited to see what CUW and CUAA have in store for us for the 2025-26 year. I think CUAA is going to be strong and we’re going to be alright," Mosher told WXYZ. Despite the challenges, the community's faith remains steadfast as they navigate the treacherous waters of fiscal uncertainty.
