The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is betting big on its collaboration with the City Colleges of Chicago, once more extending a hand to those striving to become bus operators—this time without the hefty price tag. To combat the shortage of qualified drivers plaguing the transportation industry, the CTA has reauthorized an Intergovernmental Agreement that offers a free preparatory course for acquiring a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP).

CTA President Dorval Carter, Jr. shared his enthusiasm over the partnership, stating, "The CLP pilot program proved to be very successful, helping us meet and exceed our 2023 hiring goals for bus operators." He highlighted how the program allows individuals to easily pursue opportunities that might otherwise be hindered by financial constraints. A solid 145 candidates from the pilot program, launched in 2022, have been scooped up and now drive for the CTA.

Olive-Harvey College, a participant in the City Colleges network, has particularly shone in this joint venture. The president of Olive-Harvey, Dr. Kimberly Hollingsworth, spoke highly of the program's outcome, saying, "Helping develop productive workforces through engaging learning is our goal at Olive-Harvey and we hope everyone interested takes advantage of this unique program." The initiative seeks to carve out a definitive career track for students while catering to the needs of the Windy City's transportation.

The program paves the way for candidates to enroll in a two-week course, free of charge, to secure a CLP. This is indeed pivotal to eventually snagging a Class “B” Commercial Driver's License. It's a comprehensive package—tuition, training, exam fees, and even the books, CTA covers it all. The agency evidently plans to generously reimburse the City Colleges up to $300,000 annually for two years to keep the program in motion.

This educational framework isn't just a pontoon bridge to employment—it's a viaduct to a sustainable career. The CTA isn't playing it by the book, either; in 2021, they linked arms with Olive-Harvey College to extend the CLP Prep Program to participants in the CTA Second Chance Program as well. According to the official press release, the transit agency even picks up the tab for the Illinois State Exam fee. Akin to a mentor laying out the stepping stones for proteges, the CTA is nurturing paths to lasting employment in the transit industry.
