Big bucks are flowing into the future of sports and entertainment in the heart of the nation's capital, as Mayor Muriel Bowser and the DC Council have swung a deal with Monumental Sports & Entertainment to overhaul the Capital One Arena. Touted as a futuristic urban sports complex, this project is set to be the stomping grounds for the Washington Wizards and Capitals up until 2050. In a statement obtained by dc.gov, Mayor Bowser hailed the agreement as a "win-win for our city and the teams."
"We made a great offer – and kept that offer on the table – because we have known all along that this is a win-win for our city and teams. This is a catalytic investment in Downtown DC," Bowser said. The renovation project will set the city back a cool $515 million, but promises to morph Downtown DC into a buzzing world-class entertainment district. According to dc.gov, Ted Leonsis, CEO of Monumental, emphasized the tough journey to the agreement, "We got to this place because we kept an honest dialogue with the Mayor and her staff and we both took the high road as we didn’t know how things would end."
Chairman Phil Mendelson has also piped up with enthusiasm about keeping Monumental in the Downtown mix for the long game. Mendelson told dc.gov, "With the extended relationship with Monumental, we’re looking forward to the reinvigoration of Gallery Place/Chinatown." The overall price tag for the revamp hovers around $800 million and includes bells and whistles like modernized amenities, retail expansion, and beefed-up traffic management to keep events pumping and tourists coming.
Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie spoke to the broader implications, saying that residents are clamoring for the venue for the entertainment, jobs, and economic opportunities it brings. "Our residents want the entertainment and sports programming the venue brings, as well as expanded access to job and economic opportunities for decades to come," McDuffie highlighted, per dc.gov. In addition to throwing a lifeline to local business and tourism, the project aims to be a beacon of community engagement and inclusion, with an array of programs that promote youth development and empower the city's diverse population.
