Commuters in the D.C. area are urged to take extra caution as dense fog affects visibility this morning. A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for this morning where "dense fog is expected to be the most widespread and persistent," particularly in the eastern West Virginia panhandle, northwestern Virginia, and higher elevations of the Blue Ridge and Catoctin Mountains. The National Weather Service advises motorists to be alert for reductions in visibility to one-quarter mile or less, urging them to leave extra travel time and following distance, reduce speed, and use low beam headlights, as fog and mist envelop Washington, D.C. bringing humidity levels up to 92% with a chilling wind speed from the northeast.
Today's forecast calls for persistent rain beginning after 11 a.m., areas of fog, and a high near 57 degrees, with a 90% chance of precipitation, according to NWS predictions. The rain is expected to continue into the night, mostly before 1 a.m. accompanied by areas of fog before 2 a.m., with temperatures dropping to around 49 degrees and winds from the north at 5 to 7 mph. Residents can expect the damp conditions to persist, with new precipitation amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch possible both during the day and at night.
The outlook for the coming days does not indicate hazardous weather through Tuesday, with temperatures ranging from lows in the mid-30s to highs in the low 60s. What residents can expect are variable skies, with mostly sunny conditions projected for Sunday and Tuesday, while the chance of rain will reappear on both Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday is set for rain with an 80% chance of precipitation, however, by Sunday, conditions are expected to clear up giving way to a breezy and mostly sunny day.
For folks planning outdoor activities or travel, it's worth noting that the rest of the week presents a mixed bag, Thursday might see some rain, mainly before 10 a.m., with a 30% chance of precipitation and a high near 61 degrees, and both Thursday and Friday nights promise partly cloudy skies and lows dipping into the 40s. Those looking forward to the weekend should keep their umbrellas handy as another bout of rain is expected on Saturday, with high temperatures staying around 55 degrees and a high likelihood of rain continuing into the evening.
