The City Auditor's Office has pulled back the curtain on the City of Denton's hiring practices, revealing a mix of partial successes and notable shortcomings in how it employs its workforce. A just-released audit report details the intricacies of the City's recruitment and selection operations, bearing down on both civil and non-civil service positions.
Though the City has certain protocols firmly in place for advertising job openings and courting candidates, the Auditor's findings shed light on the absence of a defined approach for the interview stage. What's more, a lack of consistency in preserving interview documentation raises questions about the transparency, and reliability of the hiring process, as the City of Denton, Texas outlined.
On the civil service front, the handling of exams, especially within the Fire Department, was found to be largely proper, but not without its glitches. The Auditor's report highlights a smattering of complications tied to Fire exam score calibrations that warrant attention. Additionally, the report brings to the forefront a need for stronger management of candidate information within the Fire Department and the Public Safety Communications Division.
In acknowledging the City's workforce doesn't yet mirror the city's diverse makeup, the report affirms that strides are being made toward redressing this imbalance. Efforts are afoot to bring forth greater equity and representation across the city's employment landscape, an initiative essential in a community as rich and varied as Denton's.
