Luck was on the side of a Denton police officer, escaping unharmed after a drunk driver rammed into a patrol car early this week. The City of Denton Police Department took to Facebook to report the close call that occurred shortly after midnight on I-35W, where officers were aiding a disabled vehicle.
According to the police account, the squad car was sideswiped when the suspect's vehicle hit its rear corner. Describing the near-miss, the City of Denton Police Department stated, "We’re relieved to say everyone is OK after an intoxicated driver struck one of our patrol vehicles overnight." The officer inside, who was thankfully not injured, sprang into action despite the impact, chasing down the fleeing driver who had sped up following the collision.
The suspect, a 23-year-old, was eventually pulled over after initially evading arrest. Denton Police conducted an immediate investigation right there on the interstate, leading to the driver's arrest for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and Evading Arrest or Detention with Vehicle. It remains unclear why the driver wanted to give the police such a hazardous game of cat-and-mouse, but the result of their recklessness is evident in the charges they now face.
The incident serves as a stern warning against the perils of driving under the influence. The police department reiterated their concern, reminding the public of the inherent dangers of drinking and driving. "This is another important reminder of the dangers of drinking and driving, and we are immensely grateful that no one was hurt," the post from the City of Denton Police Department emphasized.
DWI incidents pose a significant threat to public safety, and this episode showcases the routine risks law enforcement officers face while on duty. The fortunate outcome of this particular episode underscores the importance of responsible driving and the need for communities to remain vigilant against the scourge of drunk driving. The Denton Police have not disclosed the identity of the arrested individual pending further investigation.
