A string of "disturbing" assaults by a 37-year-old man at a Duluth gas station has ended with an arrest, police say. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Warren Crayton was nabbed by authorities after security footage caught him on a violent spree that left one victim severely injured and another partially paralyzed at the Shell gas station on the corner of Pleasant Hill Road and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.
The melee apparently unfolded in quick succession with Crayton allegedly assaulting two men in the space of an hour. After the community and media pitched in with leads, Duluth Police Department's swift action facilitated Crayton's capture outside his home on Feb. 15. He is now facing several assault-related charges, with more expected, law enforcement officials stated.
Crayton's alleged rampage began with an attack on a teenager outside a Kroger store, as reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I look up and next thing I know he punched me and I'm just bloody in my face," said the 16-year-old victim, who was not named. He recounted how the sudden attack left him bloody and unable to see.
About an hour later, Crayton was spotted on video at the gas station, giving chase and subsequently assaulting a man after an argument, causing him to trip and fall inside the convenience store. The footage revealed a knife-wielding Crayton getting the man into a headlock, hurling him down, and kicking him several times before stabbing him in the back. The victim, reportedly an employee at the gas station car wash, suffered a broken vertebra and "partial paralysis on both legs," according to police and warrants obtained by the news outlets.
Crayton's brush with the law is not a new narrative. With a history of prior offenses including terroristic threats and battery, his most recent stint in the legal spotlight entails violating probation and a mandated anger management program set to begin March 27. Duluth police, lauding the concerted effort of the public and media in apprehending Crayton, stress the importance of community vigilance and the shared goal of maintaining safety. "We are incredibly thankful to our community members for their cooperation and assistance in providing credible tips that led to the identification and apprehension of the suspect," Duluth Police Chief Jacquelyn Carruth said.
