Tuesday's meeting of the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB) was a boon for Senate District 3 in Northeastern Minnesota, as the board reviewed an impressive $9.5 million slated for economic development grants. According to Senator Grant Hauschild, this injection of funds is set to bolster the tax base, create jobs, and ensure vital regional growth. "The wide range of projects that are receiving funding will create jobs, build affordable housing, expand economic development, and ensure that our communities can thrive," Hauschild said, according to Minnesota Senate DFL.
Among the significant projects greenlit are a couple of commercial spaces earmarked for Cook County/Grand Marais. They include a sizeable mixed-use space to resuscitate businesses lost to a 2020 fire, and a new home for Papa Charlie's restaurant and event venue at Lutsen Mountains, itself a casualty of a recent inferno. A cool $400,000 apiece is allocated for these two ventures. The district also saw grants for community infrastructure enhancements like upgraded utilities and tech for the City of Tower, and regional trail development spanning from Hoyt Lakes to Two Harbors.
Housing projects were not left by the wayside, with substantial grants directed to apartment and townhome developments aimed at boosting local workforce accommodation. The City of Ely snagged a handsome $850,000 for a new 37-unit apartment building, while the Cook County Housing and Redevelopment Authority snagged $955,000 to develop multiple housing projects, including The Heights, a three-story, 36-unit workforce apartment building, as per Minnesota Senate DFL.
Senator Hauschild's excitement about the influx of economic support for his district is palpable. "Today’s IRRRB meeting highlighted a number of exciting opportunities for investment and economic growth throughout Northeastern Minnesota that will now receive the capital they need to succeed," he emphasized. Combined with additional funding sources, the total capital pouring into the region's development projects is poised to reach approximately $106.6 million. A comprehensive list outlining all the beneficiaries of this strategic economic push can be found on the Senate DFL's official website.
