Eight residents narrowly escaped a fierce fire that tore through a multi-family home in Crystal Lake, officials reported. The blaze erupted late Tuesday night at the building located at 244 2nd Street, with the Crystal Lake Fire Department receiving the call shortly before midnight.
The department swiftly arrived to confront heavy flames engulfing the two-story structure, according to a CBS News report; their efforts were soon bolstered by firefighters from neighboring jurisdictions working collaboratively to extinguish the fire which was brought under control within an hour after their rigorous intervention. In a feature that adds poignancy to the near tragedy, one resident disclosed to CBS 2 that the residence served as a sanctuary for men in the throes of recovering from alcohol addiction.
The inferno left the building severely damaged with part of it succumbing to a partial collapse, rendering the home uninhabitable, noted fire officials. Out of the residents inside at the time, all managed to evacuate safely, dodging injury on what could have been a deadly night.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway, with no clear determinants identified at this stage, fire officials confirmed, and the devastation left its mark not only on the fabric of the house but on the lives temporarily sheltered within its now-charred walls, as mentioned in a release reported by Patch. But through the quick response of both residents and fire services alike, a potential catastrophe was held at bay, in a community bound by a spirit that remains unbroken despite adversity.
