
Commuters faced unexpected delays on Interstate 80 in Will County when a horse took a tumble out of its trailer, causing traffic to grind to a halt during Thursday's rush hour. The incident occurred near Shepley Road, a stone's throw northeast of Minooka, and had law enforcement and drivers alike in a flurry.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Illinois State Police were called to the scene around 3:40 p.m. to deal with the equestrian escapee, traffic was a mess as a result of the incident but no humans or horses were hurt, the swift action of first responders culminated in the horse being safely secured back into the trailer.
The clearing of the scene and the subsequent reopening of the highway took place roughly at 4:20 p.m., a full 40 minutes after the equine interruption began. While the roadway was congested, patience prevailed among the affected motorists, who witnessed an unusual intervention to restore normalcy to the busy interstate.
Additional details surrounding the incident were sparse, however, the WJOL report noted that after the horse was back in the trailer the driver soon continued their journey authorities managed to get the traffic moving again shortly thereafter; this efficient turnaround mitigated what could have been a far more drawn-out disruption. The normal flow of traffic resumed, marking the end of an episode that is likely to become an anecdote retold in the retelling of daily commutes.
