Chaos struck early Sunday morning on Chicago's Kennedy Expressway as one individual’s life was tragically cut short in a multi-vehicle incident, authorities reported. According to Illinois State Police, the crash occurred before dawn, near Keeler Avenue, where two vehicles collided around 4 a.m. Unfortunately, a person trying to emerge from one of the wreckage was struck by an oncoming vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, reported ABC7 Chicago.
The catastrophe prompted the shutdown of both local and express lanes along the busy corridor, snarling early morning traffic. As cleanup crews and first responders worked through the dark morning hours, police kept the passage closed, reopening lanes to the thrum of Sunday's traffic by 8:21 a.m., according to state troopers.
While the expressway absorbed the first light of day with free-flowing cars once again, the somber task of piecing together the moments that led to the fatal outcome remains. The sequence of events—a crash, then an exit from a vehicle, followed by a fatal collision—unfolded tragically, as noted by a statement from the Chicago police, which NBC Chicago obtained.
Authorities have yet to release the identity of the victim as the investigation continues.
