A Haralson County man with a felony warrant led deputies on a wild chase in a U-Haul van yesterday, nearly hitting two officers before being forcibly detained. Sparky Chad Marcus, 29, from Tallapoosa, was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant when deputies with the Haralson County Crime Suppression Unit showed up at his residence, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
The deputies' visit took a dangerous turn when Marcus arrived and fled the scene, sparking a high-speed pursuit, during which he drove on the wrong side of the road and through residential properties. "This individual had no regard for the lives of the deputies or any citizen that was in his path today," Haralson County Sheriff Stacy Williams told FOX 5 Atlanta. The chase ended when a precision technique forced the van into a ditch, Marcus however, resisted arrest leading to the involvement of K-9 Deputy Janco to bring the situation under control.
According to BNN Breaking, Marcus now faces several charges in addition to the warrant he was originally sought for. These include driving with a suspended license, fleeing and attempting to elude, reckless driving, aggravated assault on a peace officer, felony fleeing and attempting to elude, and obstruction. He is also wanted in another jurisdiction, adding to his legal woes.
After being booked into the Haralson County Jail without bond, community members are coming to terms with the brazen nature of the chase and Marcus's arrest. Sheriff Williams' condemnation of the defendant's actions, reflects a wider concern for public safety. "He will face the appropriate charges for his actions, in addition to answering for his outstanding felony warrant," Williams stated, indicating the seriousness with which local law enforcement is taking the matter.
