A man was found shot to death Wednesday morning inside South Bend Park in Southeast Atlanta, according to Atlanta Police. Officers responded to the 1900 block of Compton Drive SE, inside the park, after reports of a shooting, and confirmed an adult male had been killed at the scene.
The shooting occurred inside South Bend Park, located along Compton Drive SE in Atlanta's Lakewood Heights neighborhood, as reported by WSB-TV. Atlanta Police are investigating the deadly shooting, and a WSB-TV reporter and photographer were speaking with investigators at the scene Wednesday. Channel 2 Action News said it would provide live updates at noon the same day. The park sits near other high-traffic civic venues, including Lakewood Stadium and the Lakewood Amphitheatre, according to 11Alive.
A Park With a Troubled History
Wednesday's killing is not the first fatal shooting at South Bend Park in recent years. In April 2024, 51-year-old Lenard Carr was killed and a pregnant 17-year-old was wounded during a drive-by shooting at a family gathering, with police reporting that suspects drove to the park entrance and opened fire into a crowd, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In March 2023, 31-year-old mechanic Owen Jackson was shot and killed at the park, his body found inside a flipped car at the bottom of an embankment; associates told WSB Radio he had been targeted during an attempted robbery.
The 76.6-acre park in Southeast Atlanta features a public pool, playground, sports courts, and walking trails along a tributary of the South River, per Trees Atlanta. Community groups and the city have previously conducted forest restoration projects there to clear thick kudzu and improve safety sightlines, the nonprofit notes.
Zone 3 Under Recent Strain
South Bend Park falls within Atlanta Police Department Zone 3, a precinct command covering 16 Southeast Atlanta neighborhoods including Lakewood Heights, Peoplestown, and Thomasville Heights, operating out of a facility on Metropolitan Parkway. The area has faced its own recent public safety scares: two Zone 3 officers were wounded by gunfire while responding to a call on Forest Park Road SE last Sunday, as Hoodline reported in its piece on officers shot twice in 13 days. Both officers survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
Southeast Atlanta residents in Zone 3 have previously urged city leaders for increased police presence and traffic safety measures along major neighborhood corridors, according to 11Alive, citing concerns over crime risks near public thoroughfares.
Citywide Homicides Down, But Local Violence Persists
The park shooting comes even as Atlanta has posted historic drops in homicides overall. Atlanta Police year-end data for 2025 showed citywide homicides fell to 98, down from 171 in 2022, with the department reporting a 77.55% homicide clearance rate that surpassed the national average of 61.4%. APD Chief Darin Schierbaum has emphasized that escalating disputes remain the leading cause of fatal shootings citywide. Statistics released by the department in March showed homicides fell 48% in early 2026 compared with the same period the year before, which city officials attributed to strategic patrols and expanded surveillance technology.
Still, South Bend Park's repeated history of gun violence underscores that citywide statistical progress has not eliminated risk in specific neighborhood spaces. The identity of Wednesday's victim, the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and whether it is connected to any prior incidents at the park remain unknown. It is also unclear whether Atlanta Police will increase foot or vehicle patrols around South Bend Park in response.
