On a fateful November night, the two men entered a home on Autumn Crest Court, having knocked and found the door swing open as if inviting calamity. They were there to investigate a report about a stolen vehicle lying squat in the driveway. With darkness as their witness—and perhaps their adversary, according to District Attorney Sherry Boston—the events unfolded tragically. Marando Salmon, 37, the homeowner, was shot and killed in what became a lethal misunderstanding involving a cellphone mistaken for a weapon. The aftermath found both Mathis and Vance booking themselves into DeKalb County Jail, with a bond that smacked of irony: Vance, a trifling $3,000; Mathis, a heftier $8,000, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution detailed.
