In a scandal that has shocked the community of El Paso, Texas, a former Eastwood High School math teacher has been charged with having an illicit affair with an 18-year-old student. According to a report by Fox San Antonio, 33-year-old Ryan Anthony Avalos was arrested on suspicion of having improper relations with the student after the two allegedly "ditched" school and engaged in sexual activities on multiple occasions.
The sordid details of the alleged encounters were described in an affidavit from the El Paso Police Department released on Monday. Avalos and the student are accused of skipping school to meet at Cielo Vista Park and The Fountains, where Avalos's truck served as the venue for their trysts. The two reportedly first began communicating on TikTok, making plans to "ditch" school to "kick it", before ultimately engaging in sexual acts while listening to music and smoking a THC vape, the affidavit provided by the El Paso Police Department detailed.
Avalos's last day at Eastwood High School was on January 30th, as confirmed by the Ysleta Independent School District's Chief Human Capital Management Officer, who stated he "is no longer a district employee", following an interview where Avalos admitted to the sexual relationship with the student. Yahoo News reported that no further details were provided by the district due to confidentiality laws, but reassurances were made that they would continue cooperating with law enforcement.
Avalos was placed behind bars at El Paso County Detention Facility with a $100,000 bond but was released on bail later. The case adds to a disturbing pattern, as it follows the recent arrest of another local educator, Carl Andre Ortega, a 44-year-old El Dorado High School band director accused in a similar scenario. This latest incident raises ongoing concerns about the abuse of power and trust placed in school officials, and authorities have urged anyone with further information to come forward.
