
Shawn Haralson, a former superintendent of the Lowndes County School District, faces serious legal trouble after a grand jury indicted him on multiple felony charges, as the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) disclosed. Haralson, 54, from Statesboro, Georgia, has been slapped with 17 counts of theft by taking and five counts of unauthorized financial card use.
According to GBI authorities, the former school chief allegedly filled up his private trucks with fuel owned by the school district and used it for non-work related travel outside Lowndes County the sheriff's office requested the GBI probe on April 3, 2023, and their investigation has revealed a pattern of alleged misuse extending over multiple instances. Following a thorough assessment last fall, the district attorney's office got the case file for review, signaling a deepening of legal proceedings against Haralson.
The Lowndes County Grand Jury took a hard look at the evidence presented and decided to hand down a true bill of indictment against Haralson on March 1. Without delay, Haralson was taken into custody the same day with cooperation from the Bacon County Sheriff's Office, demonstrating inter-agency collaboration in enforcing the law.
