Konstantin Koltsov, the former NHL player known for his tenure with the Pittsburgh Penguins, has died at age 42 in what the Miami-Dade Police Department is calling an "apparent suicide." In a grim turn of events, the Belarusian ice hockey standout and boyfriend of tennis star Aryna Sabalenka reportedly took a fatal leap from a balcony at Miami's St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort yesterday morning, as detailed in a police statement.
The call to the authorities came at approximately 12:39 a.m., after Koltsov, fell from the balcony, according to the New York Post. The Homicide Bureau of the Miami-Dade Police Department is handling the investigation with no suspicion of foul play. Koltsov, a forward, had a noticeable NHL career and also represented Belarus in the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics.
The news was confirmed in a heartfelt statement from his former Russian team, Salavat Yulaev Ufa. "It is with deep sorrow that we inform you that the coach of Salavat Yulaev, Konstantin Koltsov, has passed away," the club mentioned, honoring his strong, cheerful character and the deep respect he garnered from players, colleagues, and fans alike.
Pittsburgh Penguins, his former NHL franchise, offered "their deepest condolences to the family, and friends" of Koltsov, who appeared in 144 games for the team, as CNN reported. Koltsov's international career was just as impressive, having played for his nation in two Olympics and winning the Russian Super League championship with Salavat Yulaev in 2008, where he later turned to coaching.
Sabalenka, currently ranked No. 2 in the world of women's tennis, has been associated with Koltsov since June 2021, as the New York Post highlighted. She had recently expressed her affection for Koltsov in a social media post, calling him the "best man in the world" and the source of her daily happiness. The couple's relationship was thrust into the public spotlight as Koltsov frequently accompanied Sabalenka during her tennis tournaments around the globe.
