The Rockdale County music community has been shaken by the arrest of a former high school band director on charges of sexual assault involving a minor. Jacques Jones, who previously led the Rockdale County High School band, is accused of unspeakable misconduct with a student, who was not enrolled at the institution where he taught.
As reported by FOX5 Atlanta, Jones faces several charges including two counts of sodomy, one of aggravated sexual battery, and one of aggravated child molestation. Arrested on March 12, Jones's employment with Rockdale County Public Schools was swiftly terminated in light of the allegations, which did not stem from his professional role within the district.
According to details provided by WSB-TV, the incident that led to the arrest transpired on February 21 and emerged from interactions that started on social media. “The adult male up with the minor and he brought the minor back to his residence here in Rockdale County and they engaged in a sexual act. And then after the sexual act, the minor was driven back home. And once he got home, he made an outcry to his mother. His mother called us and filed a report,” stated Rockdale County Sheriff's Investigator Grote Levett in the WSB-TV report. After the alleged assault, the minor made an outcry to his mother, which put the wheels of justice in motion and Jones ultimately surrendered to authorities.
Reactions from the community underscore the distress and anguish over the events. Elsie Ortiz, the mother of a Rockdale High School student, told WSB-TV, "It’s heartbreaking. Because not all kids will run to (their) parents to say something like this." The school district, maintaining distance from the allegations, confirmed Jones's separation from his position and emphasized their expectation of the highest ethical standards from their employees.
He is currently out on bail and his scheduled court appearance next week will mark the beginning of formal proceedings on the path to determining his guilt or innocence.
