In a move that is surely to make local government a bit more artistic, the Fort Lauderdale City Commission will now hold its meetings within the illustrious walls of the NSU Art Museum’s William and Norma Horvitz Auditorium. Since a flood wreaked havoc on City Hall in April of last year, officials have been on the lookout for a more permanent solution for their gatherings.
Despite the unfortunate incident that led to the flooding of their former meeting place, the Commission has kept on trucking thanks to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, which stepped in to offer a temporary home for democracy in action. Although the meetings were held at the Broward Center, the City Manager Greg Chavarria hinted at the new setting, saying, “We are excited to host the City Commission meetings at the NSU Art Museum, a venue that embodies the spirit of creativity and community," according to the City of Fort Lauderdale's official announcement.
Starting today, government will get a touch of culture as every Tuesday will see city commissioners debate ordinances and policies amidst a backdrop of artistic expression. Situated smack-dab in the heart of Fort Lauderdale, the NSU Art Museum boasts not only a significant collection but also now the heartbeat of the city’s civic discourse.
The city has praised the Broward Center’s cooperative spirit, offering its thanks for their support beginning the City Hall flood. Chavarria insisted the new location continues the Commission's mission and enhances public engagement, remarking, "This move not only allows us to continue our essential mission but also provides a unique and inspiring backdrop for the public to engage." The venue change to the NSU Art Museum was shared by The City of Fort Lauderdale.
Residents are encouraged to drop by the auditorium, where they will be given a voice in shaping Fort Lauderdale's future. With parking readily available at the Riverwalk Center Garage, directly north of the museum, the city hopes to see a strong turnout from community members.
