A quiet afternoon in a Fort Lauderdale neighborhood erupted into chaos as gunfire rang out, leaving one man dead and a community reeling. According to Local 10, Jason Fogelman, a local resident who leads a neighborhood watch, with his 9-year-old son witnessed the murder outside an Airbnb property known for issues. Fogelman, who was driving by the house on NE 57th Street at the time, called 911 around 1 p.m. when the shots were fired.
The situation quickly unfolded as first responders began to quickly investigate. Fort Lauderdale Police arrived to find evidence of the incident but initially searched for the victim. As later confirmed, the shooting resulted in a fatality with the man dying after arriving at Broward Health Imperial Point Hospital for treatment. "There was a helicopter overhead," Fogelman told Local 10, as the community tried to grapple with what happened.
Surveillance footage captured the distressing aftermath, showing people frantically attempting to assist the victim into a vehicle. A neighbor’s Ring camera also caught the sound of gunfire and the subsequent screams of terror. "These Airbnb have been bringing problems to our neighborhood for years," Fogelman voiced his concern in an e-mail, as reported by Local 10. Fort Lauderdale Police Department has detained three suspects at the scene and, according to Detective Ali Adamson, do not believe there are any further outstanding suspects.
Fogelman and other residents point to the short-term rental property as a nexus for trouble, with frequent parties disrupting the peace. “Every other week, we have somebody coming in," explained Fogelman in an NBC 6 Miami interview. "You have some good people that come in. But every other week, there's a party." Claiming the situation was not being taken seriously enough, residents are urgently calling for accountability and measures to better vet Airbnb guests to protect the neighborhood.
Nearby residents had previously phoned police following a large party at the same property the day before the fatal shooting. "There was a massive party. There was cars everywhere. They threw something at my mother. So, the cops come. Not even 45 minutes later, the party picks back up," said Fogelman, according to various reports. Following the incident, the house bore several city code violation notices. Fort Lauderdale detectives are continuing to investigate the case and are asking for any additional information from the public.
