The Fort Sam Houston Independent School District is on the hunt for two new members to join its 5-person school board. Positioned on San Antonio's near East Side, the district has put out a call for applications from individuals willing to guide the educational future for military-connected students. The open positions are unique to military districts, which are in the minority within the state of Texas, with only three existing in San Antonio.
Qualifications for the board stipulate that nominees must be over 18, a U.S. citizen, and a qualified voter, according to information from the FSHISD website. Potential trustees need to ideally be either a military member or a Department of Defense civilian who is a resident on or employed by Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. Those interested need to quickly send their resume to [email protected] by 5 p.m. on March 21 to be considered. To quickly fill the vacancies, the selection process will involve an evaluation by a panel of installation representatives, followed by a recommendation to the installation commander, and final approval by the State Board of Education.
Nominees will be put through their paces, with their suitability to serve as a trustee, community involvement, objectivity, and experience with fiscal matters, among other qualifications, coming under scrutiny. "Applicants will be evaluated on several categories including their availability to serve as a trustee, community involvement, objectivity, fiscal competency experience with budgetary matters, experience with public school education and likelihood of serving entire two-year term," the San Antonio Report indicated.
The voluntary role asks for a significant commitment, with trustees serving two-year terms without financial compensation. Adding to this, the application process is layered with a series of interviews and evaluations by a selected panel, further endorsed by the 502d Force Support Squadron Director. According to the FSHISD website, after a board member is recommended by the installation commander, the nominee's package is then sent to the TEA for inclusion in the State Board of Education's quarterly meetings for final approval and appointment.
For those looking to gather more details before throwing their hat in the ring, the opportunity to serve on the board is not only a chance to have a direct impact on educational policy but also to ensure that the unique needs of military families are met and addressed. Individuals can reach out for further information by contacting (210) 221-2214 or 221-2256, as stated by FSHISD.
