Chaos erupted on a Boston street when a school bus full of children rammed into a Dorchester home on Monday afternoon. The collision at 8 Wentworth Street near Norfolk Street injured four individuals — including two children — all of whom were taken to the hospital for evaluation, as confirmed by Boston EMS and reported by WCVB.
A witness described the terrifying moment when the bus driver lost control, "As soon as I looked up, you see her hit the car that was next to her, She ran into the car and then ran straight into a house," this witness purportedly told WCVB. The driver, bus monitor, and two children received hospital treatment for what police stated were minor injuries. Concerns grew for the integrity of the impacted house, with the owner fearing structural compromise from the force of the crash.
The incident, which took place around 4:40 p.m., saw a Boston Public School bus embedded under the porch of a historic family home. Donna Scott, who grew up in the concerning residence, told NBC Boston, "My husband called me, and he was panicked and said, 'A bus hit the house.' And I'm thinking to myself, 'How?'" Upon her rush to the crash scene, Scott found the school bus wedged beneath her porch.
In the aftermath of the crash, Good Samaritans like Keyanna Jackson, sprang into action to evacuate the bus, "We got all the kids off the bus, and when we got all the kids onto the sidewalk, I did an evaluation on the kids," Jackson recounted to NBC Boston. "About three of them hit their heads." Meanwhile, utilities had to be shut down as authorities fretted over the stability of the home's porch, necessitating delicate efforts to remove the bus, a process described in detail by Boston Fire Commissioner Paul Burke.
The home now stands boarded up, a stark reminder of the day's unsettling events, with investigators working to pinpoint the cause of the accident that left a community shaken. Meanwhile, local residents are left to ponder the fragility of routine — the abrupt disruption of an otherwise peaceful day by the screeching halt of a school bus out of bounds.
