The loss of Chief Smith comes in the wake of the Smokehouse Creek Fire, a brutal wildfire he had been fighting for over a week before he died in the structure fire. The City of Borger/Hutchinson County Office of Emergency Management, in a Facebook post, expressed their condolence, stating, "Chief Zeb Smith served the Fritch and Hutchinson County community with selflessness and dedication," as reported by Yahoo News.
