San Antonio's Migrant Resource Center (MRC) faces an uncertain future as federal dollars drain away, and the city scrambles to find a lifeline for this vital refuge serving the needs of asylum-seekers. With more than $121.2 million spent since January 2021 in aid to migrants, and only $10.5 million left expected to run dry by September, local officials are pressured to devise a backup plan to avoid service disruption.
While city council members appear unanimous in their desire to keep the MRC operational, they seemed split on whether to commit local funds to keep it afloat. "San Antonio dollars need to be spent on San Antonians. We need to prioritize our citizens," Councilman Marc Whyte (D10) firmly opposed diverting local funds to continue migrant aid, as per a recent KSAT interview.
Catholic Charities San Antonio, tasked with the day-to-day operations of the MRC since October 2022, has been crucial in supporting 280,000 migrants with food, shelter, and transportation services – all potentially jeopardized as funding dries up. "I would believe that yes, the city should provide funding for them," said Antonio Fernandez, president and CEO of Catholic Charities in San Antonio, emphasizing the humanitarian nature of the issue in a statement obtained by KENS 5.
Meanwhile, the city council discussed possible reallocation of federal funds as an interim measure but remained cagey about dipping into city coffers. "I don’t think I would ever recommend using local dollars short of an emergency," City Manager Erik Walsh conveyed his stance, implying the importance, yet hesitance, to allocate local funds for this matter to KSAT.
As the impasse continues, Mayor Ron Nirenberg criticized Congress, "They’re creating impacts and leaving local communities to their own devices. And that is not sustainable," he told reporters, underlining the wider political and systemic failures in a KSAT interview. With the federal government still to resolve the immigration system's chronic issues, San Antonio's solidary hand to migrants waits on tenterhooks.
