In a heartbreaking turn on the first day of the new year, Destiny Dixon, a 23-year-old mother from Galesburg, IL, was killed while trying to do a good deed. The Illinois State Police (ISP) are now seeking the public's help to solve the tragic hit-and-run that claimed her life.
According to an ISP release, Dixon was one of several individuals who stopped to assist a motorist following a rollover crash on Interstate 55 near Braceville, Grundy County, around 7:30 p.m. on January 1, 2024 when a second vehicle, described as a dark grey Mitsubishi Endeavor model years 2010-2011, plowed through the chaos at high speed, hitting Dixon and another man; she later succumbed to her injuries while the other victim's condition remains undisclosed.
Authorities are on the hunt for the Mitsubishi, which would have noticeable damage to the front left side, including the headlight and side mirror. ISP Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1 believes someone out there has the critical information that could lead to an arrest and bring closure to Dixon's bereaved family, left to mourn a young mother who lost her life far too soon.
Grundy County Crime Stoppers has put up a $1,000 reward for information leading to the driver's capture, highlighting the community's vested interest in seeing justice served, the same community Dixon herself was aiding in her final moments. Anyone with any leads is encouraged to contact Sergeant Cary Morin at 779-243-4770 or call Crime Stoppers directly at 815-942-6645, as noted in the official ISP press release.
In a time when so many stories pass through the daily cycle, Destiny Dixon's death serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the continuous need for us to come together as a community; to aid those in their darkest moments, and to seek out justice for those who can no longer fight for themselves.
