Gothamites looking for a slice of culture won't have to break the bank this Friday night. Downtown Garland is throwing open its doors for a free gallery walk on March 8, where art aficionados and casual perusers alike can get an up-close look at one of David Bates' original sculptures. For those out of the loop, Bates isn't just any hometown hero; he's a national treasure with pieces gracing over 40 museums across the States.

To kick off the evening, make your way to the Landmark Museum at 393 N. Sixth St. between 5 and 8 p.m. "An exclusive showing" of Bates’ work will be waiting to greet you — and to think, this is the guy who used to roam the halls of Garland High School. If that's not the picture of 'local boy makes good', I don't know what is. From there, the art adventure will roll on to Ninth Street Gallery and Epiphany Gallery, as per the City of Garland.

Lastly, as if the evening needed any more culture cred, Anne Weary is throwing an exhibit opening shindig at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St. With all the fanfare this night is shaping up to be, you might end up mistaking Garland for the Great White Way.
