The Garland Police Department has issued a warning to the public about a scam involving missing person reports on social media. According to the GPD, the scam works by taking advantage of families posting about their missing loved ones, with culprits posing as kidnappers to extort money.
A recent incident saw a family, already struck by the anguish of a disappearance, receiving calls from these fraudsters claiming to hold their missing relative. The scammers demanded cash for the supposed safe return of the family member. Thankfully, in this case, the relative returned home unharmed and the ransom demands were uncovered as a sham, as reported by the Garland Police Department.
The GPD is not treating these incidents lightly, underlining that this kind of heartless scam is becoming all too common. They are advising people to be cautious about how much personal information they share online, especially on platforms like social media where such details can be easily exploited by unscrupulous actors.
The police urge anyone who encounters calls or messages from individuals asking for money about missing persons to remain skeptical and to report these interactions to law enforcement immediately. Be aware: that scammers often use fake profiles to approach their victims, preying on their emotional states to extract money, "Always be wary of unsolicited requests for currency," warned the Garland Police Department on their social media post. Such cases highlight the growing need for awareness and vigilance in the digital space where the veil of anonymity provides a potent shield for swindlers.
