A local Georgia community is struck by tragedy as beloved baseball coach Doug Davis died after collapsing during a game on Friday. Coach Sam Ray of the DC Academy's 14U travel baseball team recounted the chilling moment to FOX 5 Atlanta, describing the ballpark’s eerie silence as the 47-year-old coach succumbed to what was reported as a massive heart attack, Davis who had been coaching alongside Ray for three years, was by his side as the tragic event unfolded.
"The whole ballpark went silent. I mean, it was eerie. It was scary," Ray said, referencing the moment that not only he but Davis' son, Ray's son and the entire team were forced to witness, in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta. The community rallied in support, with Jeff Owens, coach of the opposing Canes Sports 14U team, telling WSB-TV that players immediately began to pray for Davis, showing a unity and compassion in the face of sorrow.
Owens shared the devastating nature of the incident, "As soon as it happened, myself and the rest of the coaches rushed to Doug. Nurses and doctors came out of the stands onto the field,” marking it as one of the most devastating events he has experienced, according to a statement given to WSB-TV. Following the incident, a devotional organized by the Canes team celebrated Davis' life, bringing together families from the North Georgia baseball community to show support and love.
In a testament to the impact Davis had, Ray highlighted how he loved his players, with a "heart full of gold" that particularly shone around his own son, "His heart was full of gold. He loved the boys. He loved being around the boys, in particular, he loved being around his own son," Ray told FOX 5 Atlanta. Ray is imploring the community to continue praying for the Davis family and noted that his team would now play with a passion that embodies the spirit of Coach Davis for the remainder of the season, a tribute to a man who gave so much to the game and its young players.
The loss of Davis is palpably felt by those close to him and the broader baseball community, a sentiment echoed by both teams affected and these expressions of grief highlight the strong bonds formed on and off the baseball field; funeral services for Davis are scheduled for Monday afternoon.
