A Georgia couple's beach day turned into a nightmare as they faced child neglect charges after being discovered passed out and intoxicated on Daytona Beach, while their young kids were left unsupervised. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Alyssia Langley and Timothy Stephens, both 27, were arrested this past Saturday following the alarming discovery by Volusia County deputies.
The authorities were alerted by an anonymous 911 call, which led to the disturbing scene of the couple asleep in the sand. A deputy tried multiple times to rouse the pair to no avail, as detailed in an arrest affidavit. The situation escalated when the couple appeared to be clueless about the location of their children, ages five and seven, despite deputies' probing. Eventually, the children were found swimming unsupervised in a hotel pool nearby.
"It just boggles my mind that you would drive here and get obliterated and allow a five- and a seven-year-old to wander off," Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood expressed his disbelief in an interview obtained by Spot On Florida. The predicament ended with the kids safe but their parents in custody, both charged with a third-degree felony for child neglect.
In a dramatic twist, before Stephens could be escorted to jail, he attempted an escape from the authorities, which resulted in him face-planting on the ground and knocking himself unconscious. He had to receive medical treatment as a consequence. Sheriff Chitwood didn't mince words when he spoke of the responsibilities—or lack thereof—displayed by the couple: "When we wonder what we see, why kids are the way they are, you gotta take a step back and look at who's in charge. And clearly, these two clowns shouldn't be in charge of... they can't be in charge of themselves, let alone a five-year-old or a seven-year-old," he told FOX 5 Atlanta.
The incident has sparked debate over parental responsibility and the safeguarding of children during what should have been a leisurely family vacation. As the couple face the legal repercussions of their actions, the case serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of vigilant supervision of young children, especially in public and potentially dangerous settings.
