A Georgia man has been slapped with multiple charges, including malice murder, after a fatal shooting in Brooks County. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) announced the arrest of 27-year-old Jonah Kenney, from Quitman, in relation to the death of Jed Maichele, also of Quitman.
Kenney, who has been revealed to be the nephew of the victim, is facing charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. According to a statement released by the GBI, the Brooks County Sheriff's Office called in the state agency to help to intensely investigate the shooting that occurred on Blair Road around 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2024.
Shortly after the violence erupted, deputies found 56-year-old Maichele with gunshot wounds. Emergency responders rushed him to the Brooks County Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The break in the case came when a state trooper pulled over Kenney for unrelated traffic violations later that evening in the vicinity of the shooting.
Post-arrest, the GBI took Kenney in for questioning, and he was subsequently booked into the Brooks County Jail. While the motive remains unclear, the GBI continues to dig deeper into the relationship between Kenney and Maichele, aiming to unravel the events that led to this family tragedy.
The GBI is conducting an autopsy on Maichele to ascertain the specific causes of death.
