A fatal altercation between neighbors at a Glendale apartment complex ended with one man dead from multiple stab wounds and another in custody charged with second-degree murder, authorities said Monday. The suspect, identified as Michael Espinoza Jr., 50, was arrested after a standoff with Glendale SWAT following the brutal attack on 49-year-old Ismael Mejias IV, as FOX 10 Phoenix reported.

The incident occurred late Saturday night near 67th and Glendale Avenues. Police responded to the scene around 9:25 p.m. after receiving reports of the fight. They discovered Mejias bleeding on the floor of the complex, unresponsive from nine stab wounds, clad in a dark blue T-shirt and gray or camouflage shorts. According to a report by AZ Family, officers followed a blood trail that led to an apartment directly south of Mejias' residence, linking the same shoeprint from the bloody scene to the door of the apartment where Espinoza and his father were found.

Further investigation revealed a grim piece of evidence as Mejias' phone captured the audio of the fatal encounter. However, the video only shows the moment the phone was knocked out of his hand. Court documents referenced by AZ Family detailed that Espinoza can be heard on the recording saying, "You're dead. You're a dead man. You're dead, homie. You're dead, b****." This ultimately contradicts Espinoza Jr.'s claims during his interrogation that Mejias had attacked him first and that he did not fight back.

During interviews with the officers, Espinoza Jr. changed his story multiple times before asserting that Mejias was the aggressor, coming at him with a knife and hurling racial slurs, as FOX 10 Phoenix obtained from the police. Espinoza Jr. alleged that he managed to disarm Mejias and tossed the knife aside, admitting to hitting Mejias with the knife handle but denying the act of stabbing. The police also confronted Espinoza regarding the victim's son, leading him to request a lawyer immediately—a detail the documents from the court did not clarify further.

Espinoza Jr. is now booked into jail facing a second-degree murder charge. As this case progresses, more information is expected to surface regarding the circumstances that led to the death of Ismael Mejias IV and the legal fate of Michael Espinoza Jr.
