A man, reportedly homeless, was shot while soliciting donations at a busy Chamblee gas station on Monday afternoon, leading to a rapid arrest of the alleged shooter by the authorities. The incident occurred at a QuikTrip located on Chamblee Tucker Road near Interstate 85, at approximately 12:35 p.m. The man was seeking financial help from customers at the time, Chamblee police have reported.
The victim had been approaching individuals for money, and upon reaching one particular vehicle at pump 6, was shot, inflicting a severe torso wound. It was his misfortune to simply ask for help, only to find himself in a life-threatening situation. The man was quickly transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he remains in critical condition, FOX 5 Atlanta reported.
In response to the shooting, police undertook the task to swiftly trace and locate the shooter's vehicle, which was found roughly ninety minutes later in East Point. A suspect was taken into custody following the discovery of the vehicle.
Details regarding the identity of both the victim and the alleged gunman have been withheld by the Chamblee Police Department as the investigation continues. What drove the suspect to so abruptly pull the trigger on a man whose only apparent crime was to economically exist in desperation is yet unclear. "Witnesses say the victim was asking different people for money at the pumps when he walked up to the suspect’s vehicle (and) was shot," Chamblee police said, according to the account seen in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
