Houstonians, it's time to take control of your health, at no cost to your wallet. The Houston Health Department, teaming up with the Ibn Sina Foundation, is rolling out a series of community health fairs for 2024. The initiative focuses on providing free and low-cost healthcare services, including vaccinations and health screenings, to the city's residents. The next stop on this wellness tour is slated for March 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kashmere Multi-Service Center, according to the department's official announcement.

Those who attend can expect a full suite of health services, from COVID-19 and flu shots to diabetes and blood pressure checks. There's also a chance to get oral health assessments, mental health training and, cancer screening referrals, among other services. Organizers are facilitating on-site enrollment for several medical benefit programs. Just be sure to bring the necessary documents: identification or passport, social security cards, and the like.

The series, organized as part of the Community Assistance and Transition Care of Houston (CATCH) initiative, aims to host 12 health fairs throughout the year. Tailored to address specific health concerns within each neighborhood, these events are designed to provide targeted assistance through the expertise of health professionals attending to each individual's unique health needs.

"Building healthy lifestyle habits is essential to reducing the risk of developing cancer or Type 2 diabetes, both of which have a high incidence in these focus communities,” Juan Alvarado, a staff analyst with the department’s Harris County Area Agency on Aging, emphasized. The fairs aren't just about check-ups, they're about empowerment, giving residents the tools they need to steer their health in a positive direction.

Those ready to take advantage of the health fair offerings at the Kashmere Multi-Service Center can sign up ahead of time online by completing a form or simply show up the day of the event.
