A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car while attempting to cross a road in Houston's bustling Galleria area earlier today. The fatal incident occurred near the intersection of Westheimer Road and Sage Road around 7:30 a.m., as reported by ABC13.
According to Houston Police Department officials, the victim was hit by an eastbound vehicle while crossing from the north to the south side of Westheimer Road. The collision's impact threw the pedestrian into another vehicle, that was stationary at the intersection. Witnesses on the scene attempted to perform CPR on the victim, who was later declared dead at a local hospital, said the police.
The driver who hit the pedestrian initially left the area following the crash but returned to the scene shortly afterward to turn themselves in to the authorities. An investigation by the HPD's Vehicular Crimes Division is currently ongoing, with officers determining if the driver was under the influence at the time of the incident and who was at fault. The police are also reviewing surveillance footage and speaking to eyewitnesses regarding the crash.
Commander Zachary Becker emphasized the need for cooperation from the public during such investigations. "We really hope we can get people's cooperation, especially when we are investigating these kind of incidents," Becker told ABC13. In a peculiar turn during the traffic control efforts following the incident, a car was spotted speeding off while honking its horn. The driver was subsequently pulled over and detained by the authorities.
In light of the tragic event, officials urged drivers to avoid the area and seek alternative routes, as confirmed by both KTRK and KHOU. The condition of the pedestrian prior to their death was reported as critical immediately after the incident. Traffic disruptions continued for some time as the intersection of Westheimer and Sage Roads remained closed during the preliminary investigation.
