Officials are probing into skeletal remains found in the Tonto National Forest, as reported by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. The scattered fragments of humanity were stumbled upon by an early walker near Sunflower, Arizona. This grim discovery was made along State Route 87, a remote stretch that sees its fair share of passersby, according to FOX 10 Phoenix.
The bones were reported to authorities just before the top of the 9 a.m. hour on Sunday. A macabre sight has since beckoned detectives from the local sheriff's department to the scene, as they look to piece together the remnants of a story long untold, as reported by 12 News.
The man, whose morning took a dark turn, was just west of milepost 216 when he stumbled over the startling find. "Portions of a human skeleton," as the sheriff's office succinctly described, were all that remained.
The identity of the deceased, as well as the circumstances that led to their skeletal remains being discarded on the forest floor, are paramount in an investigation that is only just gaining traction.
Stretching over 2.9 million acres, the Tonto National Forest's vast terrains have been the backdrop for countless memories since being established in 1905. This is a developing story.
