In a tragic incident early Sunday morning, a bicyclist lost his life on a bustling highway when a sedan struck him on Interstate 295, the Metropolitan Police Department reported. Edwin R. Morales-Martinez, a 26-year-old resident of Hyattsville, MD, was identified as the victim of the fatal collision that occurred near the River Terrace exit in the Northeast.
According to details provided by the Metropolitan Police Department, the accident happened at around 4:35 a.m., when Morales-Martinez was traveling southbound, and the impact with the Mazda sedan proved lethal, despite the driver's attempts to stay and provide assistance, they also made the emergency call, but even as DC Fire and Emergency Services arrived to render aid, it was too late for Morales-Martinez.
The bicyclist was quickly transported to a nearby hospital following the crash, where he was subsequently pronounced dead. The driver of the Mazda sedan, whose identity has not been disclosed, cooperated with the authorities, calling 911 and even attempting to administer aid to Morales-Martinez in the interim before emergency crews arrived.
Detectives from the MPD’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are now tasked with untangling the circumstances of the accident, as the investigation remains ongoing details are still forthcoming; the MPD has yet to announce whether the sedan driver will face any charges or citations in connection with the fatal encounter.
