As the U.S. Supreme Court grapples with the contentious issue of medication abortion, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul firmly reiterated his support for nationwide access to mifepristone. In the aftermath of the court's arguments, Raoul emphasized in a statement that despite the seismic shifts in the abortion landscape following the Dobbs decision, one fact remains undisputed: abortion is here to stay. He pointed out that according to a report by the Guttmacher Institute, which found over 1 million abortions in the U.S. in 2023, the highest in more than a decade, medication abortions accounted for 63% of this total.
Raoul has backed his stance with legal muscle, having joined a coalition of attorneys general to file an amicus brief to the Supreme Court in opposition to stringent efforts aimed to restrict access to mifepristone, a hallmark in reproductive care. "Mifepristone is the most commonly-used method of abortion because it is safe, effective and accessible," Raoul stated, adding that disrupting its availability could not only "hinder reproductive care," but also has the potential "to undermine the entire FDA approval process and pharmaceutical industry at large."
Reflecting his continued advocacy, Raoul has taken proactive legal actions to ensure that mifepristone remains available in Illinois, including suing in a federal court in Washington. He has also partnered with other attorneys general to defend patients' rights across the nation to access this medication. In his statement, which was obtained by the Illinois Attorney General's office, Raoul expressed optimism for continued access to mifepristone, emphasizing his unwavering dedication to defending reproductive freedoms in Illinois and beyond.
Facing relentless attacks on reproductive rights, Raoul stands firm in his commitment. "I remain optimistic that access to mifepristone will continue to remain available for safe and effective abortion and miscarriage care," he expressed in his statement. Raoul's clear message rings with the conviction of someone who is resolutely determined to not only uphold but also to fiercely protect the health and autonomy rights of individuals seeking reproductive care in an increasingly divided nation.
