Electric vehicle enthusiasts in Illinois just got a boost from the state's Department of Transportation (IDOT). A cool $50 million is being funneled into the construction of 46 new charging stations as Illinois powers up its commitment to a cleaner future. In the announcement released, the Illinois NEVI program is set to expand charging infrastructure, making it easier for EV drivers to stay juiced up on the go.
With a clear road map to support the transition to electric vehicles, Gov. JB Pritzker reiterated his administration's focus. He said, "Ongoing EV adoption is a priority for my administration," as reported by the Illinois government's official site. Pritzker's plan hinges not only on infrastructure but also on sparking new ridership through an integrated network of charging stations positioned strategically along key travel corridors.
The move is part of a larger push to make Illinois a front-runner in the EV market, including both manufacturing and use of electric vehicles. In his march toward an ambitious target, Pritzker envisions one million EVs cruising Illinois roadways by 2030. Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman told, "This funding opportunity from IDOT puts us one step closer to achieving Gov. JB Pritzker's goal to have one million EVs on Illinois roads by 2030." Osman also encouraged potential applicants to take advantage of the resources IDOT offers for those looking to contribute to the state's green transportation transition.
Interested parties must submit their applications for a slice of the $50 million pie by May 7 at 5 p.m., and IDOT's website features a webinar recording that outlines the application process. For anyone looking to plug into this opportunity or needing further detail, they can reach out to IDOT directly at [email protected], just as the call from the open road beckons to the growing fleet of electric vehicles in the Land of Lincoln.
