Illinois Commerce Commission Calls for Action During "Fix a Leak Week" to Conserve Water and Save on BillsSource: Facebook/EPA WaterSense

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has officially declared March 18-24 as Fix a Leak Week as part of a national push to put a stop to waste of water plaguing the country. The ICC is urging residents to fix household leaks which can annually send more than 10,000 gallons of water swirling down the drain per household.

The EPA's WaterSense program is handing out practical tips to shut down those water wasters. For instance, if you're seeing your water bill spike or your usage exceeds 12,000 gallons in a cold month for a family of four or fewer, you likely have to tackle a leak situation. ICC Chairman Doug Scott drove the message home, stating in a press release, "Fix a Leak Week reminds consumers to find and fix leaks that with minor fixes, can conserve water and save consumers up to 10 percent on their utility bills."

The WaterSense program advises placing some food coloring into your toilet tank to test for leaks. If the color makes its way into the bowl within ten minutes, you've got a problem. Not to mention, a worn-out toilet flapper can often be the culprit behind that incessantly running toilet. Pipe tape should do the trick, and for faucet leaks, swapping out old washers and gaskets might just be the remedy.

For those feeling less than confident about their plumbing prowess, the internet abounds with how-to videos to guide you through these minor repairs—or, to ensure the job's done right, ringing up a licensed plumber might just be your best bet. The EPA's website is also chock-full of resources to help both homeowners and businesses find and fix leaks with savvy and ease.
