In a bid to beef up the ranks of the Illinois State Police, new troopers are being lured in with the promise of hefty paychecks, to the tune of over $90,000. In the face of a tight labor market, this substantial sum marks a move by the state to remain competitive, ensuring that only the most capable individuals don the uniform and badge committed to justice and public protection, according to a press release from the ISP.
"Our Illinois State Police officers nobly serve our communities and help keep us safe," said Governor JB Pritzker in a statement obtained by Illinois State Police. He went on to assert that raising the base salary for these troopers embodies the respect his administration holds for their service, signaling an avid push to bolster their numbers.
ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly is quoted, "ISP holds its officers to the highest standards and the compensation must reflect the value we place on the sacred work they do." An extension of the application deadline to May 1, 2024, accompanies the rise in the compensation, providing more time for potential applicants to get their paperwork in order. The eligibility criteria stipulate the age, education, and clean legal record required of applicants, while additional paths to application are provided for veterans and active-duty soldiers with qualifying service or peace officers with three years of continuous service at the same agency.
Effective from July 1, 2024, a new trooper at ISP will begin commanding this increased salary upon graduation from the academy. This strategy is a part of ISP's effort to modernize the force and tackle the evolving challenges in law enforcement while catering to the diverse needs of different communities across Illinois.
