An inmate at Tarrant County Jail in Fort Worth, Texas, took his own life last week, officials said. The man, whose name has yet to be released, was found hanging in his cell on March 5 and was pronounced dead two days later after being on life support at John Peter Smith Hospital.
The Tarrant County Sheriff's Office provided a detailed timeline of the events leading up to the inmate's death. He had been in custody since November 21, 2023, facing charges of evading arrest, possession of a controlled substance, and tampering with evidence. During his time at the jail, he was held in a general population cell and was under the care of Tarrant County MHMR.
Jail protocol dictates that general population inmates are checked every 40 minutes. The last check before the inmate's suicide was conducted at 5:37 p.m. and he was found at 6:02 p.m. after having hanged himself. It appears from security footage, that the man engaged in a brief interaction with another inmate moments before his tragic decision.
In a post on their official Facebook page, the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office stated, "The initial investigation indicates the inmate planned the timing of when he would harm himself between those 40-minute checks." The case is undergoing a rigorous review process, involving multiple agencies including the Texas Attorney General's Office and the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
The Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death and release the identity of the inmate. As per standard protocol, the death is under review by several entities, ensuring a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the inmate's demise.
