A student at Klein Cain High School has been expelled and detained after bringing a loaded gun onto the campus, authorities said on Tuesday. Klein ISD police and school administrators, spurred into action by an anonymous tip received before 1 p.m., quickly found and detained 17-year-old senior Jeremiah Sherman, who reportedly had the loaded weapon on him. According to a report by ABC13, Sherman is now facing felony charges for the incident.
The district acted swiftly to ensure the safety of students and staff, not issuing a lockdown but opting to have Klein ISD officers, who are stationed full-time at the school, to immediately seek to be extra visible with additional officers for the rest of the week. An email was sent by the district to parents to confirm that all students and staff were safe and accounted for, and it outlined that the safety and well-being of everyone at the school is a top priority. It was uncovered that Sherman had previously posted an image of the gun on Instagram, which caught the attention of an individual who then alerted the authorities. "I don't know why you would think of walking in with a handgun at school. It's ridiculous," junior Milena Mejias told ABC13. "I'm glad someone gave them the hint, and they acted immediately on it. It's still dangerous to think about."
The incident raised concerns among the school community regarding security measures and the ease with which students can, potentially, bring weapons into educational institutions. Officials have not yet released details on how Sherman managed to carry the loaded gun onto the school premises undetected or what his intentions might have been.
