A Laveen art studio is seeking community support after a burglar caused extensive damage to their property and left it in disarray. The Sunshine Sunflower Studio, owned by Laurie Canfield, an art teacher who has been in the educational field for over 16 years, was defaced by a man who broke in last Friday. The studio, which Canfield had opened as her dream project after years of teaching, was gearing up to host a summer camp preview later this month before suffering the unexpected devastation.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office arrested the suspect, identified as Taylon Taylor-Whitfield, after he was discovered trespassing on the property. According to Canfield, the vandal had turned on all outdoor water sources, which led to their neighbors’ well running dry, quickly highlighting the break-in. "Somebody’s in your house," the neighbors alerted Canfield early Friday morning, as reported by ABC15. Upon arrival, Canfield’s husband encountered Taylor-Whitfield leaving the building wearing one of the studio's T-shirts.
The intrusion left the couple facing an estimated $8,000 to $10,000 in damages, a cost they hadn't planned for. Canfield's emotional investment in the studio is palpable as she described her desecrated space: artwork vandalized, sentimental items her mother had given her were displaced, and diplomas taken down from the walls. "I feel blessed that nobody was hurt," Canfield told ABC15, emphasizing the potential danger they had narrowly avoided. In her appeal on GoFundMe, she expressed the studio’s financial strain, further strained by the vandalism, and the dire need for support in repairs ahead of their scheduled events.
The art community and local residents have already begun to gather around the studio, spearheading fundraising efforts to address the immediate concern of repairs. Many are pitching in to quickly restore the studio back to its original state. Despite the setback, Canfield remains determined to continue teaching and sharing her passion for art with the community. "Teaching art is everything to me," she stated in a heartfelt message on her GoFundMe page, desperately hoping to keep her dream afloat amid the wreckage.
