In what patrons described as a shocking incident, a 33-year-old man was arrested at the MJR Southgate Cinema 20 after he was found exposing himself during a movie screening. The Southgate Police Department responded to calls regarding a disorderly, intoxicated individual who refused to leave the theater last Thursday.
According to a report by The Detroit News, officers found the man passed out with his genitalia exposed around 9:07 p.m. He was discovered during a showing of "Love Lies Bleeding," a film featuring actress Kristen Stewart in a same-sex relationship. The police statement did not specify the title of the movie, but this detail was to later come to light through social media postings.
The incident gained traction when an image of the man, asleep and exposed, surfaced on X. This quickly ignited a flurry of attention online. Rolling Stone reported that the viral post showed "several alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, and a vape" on the table next to the slumping individual.
Authorities arrested the man on multiple charges, which include possession of narcotics, indecent exposure, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest, as conveyed by a release from Southgate police covered by FOX 2 Detroit. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office is set to review the case. Furthermore, the depiction of queer romance in "Love Lies Bleeding" has stirred conversations, particularly driven by Kristen Stewart's recent commentary addressing the backlash against the film's overt themes of female sexuality on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert."
Stewart, who had previously ignited debate with her Rolling Stone cover story, told the publication in an interview, "I think there's a certain overt acknowledgment of female sexuality that has its own volition in a way that's annoying for people who are sexist and homophobic." This conversation added another layer to an already contentious incident, spotlighting the themes of the movie around which the arrest occurred.
