A break in the case of Deshawn Pledger's death comes as cops apprehended a man suspected in the January 8 murder that shook Portland's Hazelwood neighborhood. Xavier V. Lucas, 32, was nabbed in Hesperia, California, by the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force on February 22, as detailed in an announcement by the Portland Police Bureau.
This arrest followed thorough detective work by the Homicide Unit which led them to Lucas, a Portland resident, whose past includes run-ins with the law. Charged with Murder in the Second Degree and being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm, he was found holed up way south in San Bernadino County. Behind bars at the West Valley Detention Center, he awaits extradition procedures to face justice back in Multnomah County.
A procedure of the case has been passed to the Multnomah County District Attorney's office to ensure the wheels of justice churn unimpeded.
