An afternoon stroll through Otay Mesa West turned violent yesterday when a 34-year-old Hispanic man was grazed in the head by gunfire, San Diego police reported. The victim, whose name has not been released, was walking with his girlfriend on 900 Beyer Way when they were confronted by about seven males, the altercation quickly escalating to a shooting.
According to the San Diego Police Department's Watch Commander's Log, the incident began with a brief verbal spat before one of the assailants brandished a gun, fired roughly seven shots, and struck the victim. He was subsequently rushed to a local hospital and is expected to recover from the non-life-threatening injury. Although shaken by the incident, the couple was luckily spared a more tragic fate.
Detective work is underway as Southern Division detectives took charge of the investigation, scouring the scene for evidence and potential witnesses. Nevertheless, the shooters have yet to be apprehended, and the victim has been unable to provide a detailed description of his attackers, complicating the search for those responsible.
The San Diego Police Department urges anyone with information about the shooting to step forward, their plea resounding across community lines as they aim to piece together the circumstances of the near-deadly encounter.
